This was an unintended side effect.  There was some IRC discussion about
this, and since there was already a disruption I'm looking into whether
I can make the alternatives stuff simpler as a result (grouped
alternatives instead of alternatives for everything).

If that doesn't work out, then simply reduce $PATH pollution is probably
not worth the disruption of the user's choices.  I'll go back to the
previous setup.

I don't think there's a good way to handle that.
