I did this morning package update, and even though only kernel and dbus changes should necessitate a reboot, I rebooted.
It seems that the evolution data server daemons now get started, which wasn't true yesterday, and Evolution now starts. So the problem had been that the initial package update caused some issue which meant that the evolution data server daemons failed to start but this has now (somehow) been fixed. It seems this bug can be closed.
