Man page says:

   Browser options
       -cols num
              with stdout as destination; HTML is rendered to lines of num
characters

Well it should work also for

$ w3m -cols 88
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/25/opinion/huawei-internet-security.html

not just for

$ w3m -cols 88 -dump
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/25/opinion/huawei-internet-security.html

Why can't I browse the article at the width I want? Why do I have to
-dump first and then use "less" or "more" to read the article?

In fact it isn't even a "Browser option" if one cannot use it when
browsing.

And it doesn't even die with an error when it is being ignored.
