Package: logrotate Version: 3.15.1-1 Severity: normal In case of an error during the log rotation, e.g. a gzip failure with "warning: file timestamp out of range for gzip format"[*], when log rotation is done via the systemd timer, one does not get any mail, contrary to cron jobs.
The error message is in the systemd logs, but this is not sufficient. Logs are fine for informational messages in order to debug or to try to find the cause of a problem, but for something that requires a manual intervention like here, the user must be informed, otherwise the problem may remain unnoticed for a long time. [*] See e.g. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=504333 but note that the original problem with missing mail in this old bug was different as systemd did not exist at that time. -- Package-specific info: Contents of /etc/logrotate.d total 48 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 120 2017-10-21 19:50:34 alternatives -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 442 2017-09-03 16:33:19 apache2 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 173 2015-08-21 19:35:39 apt -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 79 2015-09-18 00:32:19 aptitude -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 131 2018-08-22 03:38:47 btmp -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 112 2017-10-21 19:50:34 dpkg -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 128 2019-08-14 08:54:40 exim4-base -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 108 2019-08-14 08:54:37 exim4-paniclog -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1029 2017-01-25 20:45:37 psaccs_atop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 541 2017-01-25 20:45:37 psaccu_atop -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 501 2017-06-25 18:27:04 rsyslog -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 131 2018-08-22 03:38:51 wtmp -- System Information: Debian Release: bullseye/sid APT prefers unstable-debug APT policy: (500, 'unstable-debug'), (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 5.2.0-2-amd64 (SMP w/12 CPU cores) Kernel taint flags: TAINT_PROPRIETARY_MODULE, TAINT_OOT_MODULE, TAINT_UNSIGNED_MODULE Locale: LANG=POSIX, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE=POSIX (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled Versions of packages logrotate depends on: ii anacron 2.3-29 ii cron [cron-daemon] 3.0pl1-135 ii libacl1 2.2.53-4 ii libc6 2.29-1 ii libpopt0 1.16-12 ii libselinux1 2.9-2+b2 ii systemd-sysv 242-7 Versions of packages logrotate recommends: ii mailutils [mailx] 1:3.6-1+b1 logrotate suggests no packages. -- Configuration Files: /etc/logrotate.conf changed: weekly rotate 52 create include /etc/logrotate.d /etc/logrotate.d/btmp changed: /var/log/btmp { missingok monthly create 0660 root utmp rotate 36 } /etc/logrotate.d/wtmp changed: /var/log/wtmp { missingok monthly create 0664 root utmp rotate 36 } -- no debconf information
