When I operate my laptop's screen brightness buttons, an overlay appears, usually with a bar showing the current level. Since upgrading to buster+wayland, the overlay appears, but the bar doesn't: it's always blank. Just noticed that this is *not* the case prior to login; I assume that the gdm greeter doesn't use wayland?
