according to debian/patches-applied/update-motd there is a Debian-specific mechanism to somehow transfer the contents of /etc/update-motd.d to the motd that is displayed on login. This mechanism is not mentioned aside from the man page of pam_motd which mentioned that "noupdate" can be set to avoid this mechanism. At least, this man page is missing some explanation what this mechanism does when noupdate is not used. Greetings Marc
