I just tried downgrading dgit to 8.1 on the same machine that I was
using when I reported this bug.
Following my own instructions, I can no longer reproduce the problem,
and your repro-{3,4} scripts do indeed fail with the same unhelpful
error.
So I think we can conclude that the reason you couldn't reproduce the
bug was that the instructions I wrote were not the steps actually
required to reproduce the bug on this machine. Or, perhaps I was
mistaken in some other way.
This isn't very helpful, but I thought it should be written down in the
bug nonetheless. My apologies for wasted time.
