Pheeewwww. After switching to individual links inside /usr/share/doc/r-doc-html/manual -- instead of the link of the entire manual/ directory -- it now works. We have html indices via 'dhelp &' and other mechanism accessing below /usr/share/doc/HTML/. That may be worth the minor inflexibility of having to add links one by one.
