To me this looks more like an alsa bug than a swh-plugins bug. The plugins (at least in .4.14-1) appear to operate as expected in other host apps (specifically I tested dyson compressor with the same arguments as in the bug report in Audacity, and recieved an output that was not distorted in a way inconsistant with expectations).
