I'm surprised to hear that -- i think most people use the notmuch database to store at least tags (which are not inherently reproducible), and some configuration data is already stored in the database (see notmuch_database_{set,get}_config in /usr/include/notmuch.h ) Backups of this non-cache data are typically performed with "notmuch dump" and "notmuch restore". --dkg
