The installer should not do this.
If the necessary firmware is installed, the amdgpu driver should work,
of course. If the firmware is not installed, the driver is supposed to
bail out early (this is a Debian-specific patch).
Was the firmware (firmware-amd-graphics package) installed on your test
system?
