pkconfig can make the distinction between libraries needed to link against, say, -lneon dynamically, and libraries need at run time (needed for, e.g., static linking, IIRC). The .private fields are for that second use case, and probably shouldn't be displayed for normal dynamic linking, as it creates spurious needed entries. Roughly, speaking, anyway - I still have to sort out some of the finer points of what pkconfig can do, myself, but I think that's the important part of it here.
