This usually happens with broken .Xdefaults settings, e.g.: xdvi*geometry: 900x1000 instead of: xdvi.geometry: 900x1000 You could check the resource settings with e.g. $ appres XDvi xdvi | grep geom and look for the setting in the global XDvi file and your ~/.Xdefaults.
