I don't know which of the points above helped, but e4defrag fixed the segfaults for me that I was having with version 1.44.5. I guess that, if other people participating on this thread (which I had not received, BTW) don't have problems with this version, then it can be closed (and the version in unstable should definitely migrate to testing, so that it is released with Debian 10).
