The good news is that this problem disappeared after the next aptitude update.
But it remains a mystery.

This morning I found the information I think you're looking for in
/var/log/syslog.6.gz.  During the time of this log, I did an aptitute
update and rebooted, after which the wifi didn't work.  I'm attaching the
result of

gunzip -c syslog.6.gz | egrep '(NetworkManager|Starting Flush Journal to
Persistent Storage|wifi)' | xz -c9 /tmp/basil-syslog-selections.xz

to this email.  The file begins with wifi in working condition.  Lines
containing "Starting Flush Journal..." show when the machine is booting
up.
