I think 9 years definitely makes this bug Overcome by Events (OBE). :) I'm in the middle of moving to California, so let me get that out of the way and I'll dig up a copy of Debian 5.0.4 and try to reproduce it. Then I'll walk it through the patches and see what happens so we can get final closure on this.
