Thanks for digging. I just looked at it, and I also couldn't reproduce it initially. The difference turned out to be the python version: I now have 3.7 as my default python3, but at the time of the bug report, it was 3.6. So today I see this: dima@scrawny:~/debianstuff$ python3.7 /usr/bin/dput -sf python-gnuplotlib_0.23-1_amd64.changes Trying to upload package to ftp-master (ftp.upload.debian.org) Checking signature on .changes gpg: /home/dima/debianstuff/python-gnuplotlib_0.23-1_amd64.changes: Valid signature from ED63B6125A1D1561 Checking signature on .dsc gpg: /home/dima/debianstuff/python-gnuplotlib_0.23-1.dsc: Valid signature from ED63B6125A1D1561 Uploading with ftp: /home/dima/debianstuff/python-gnuplotlib_0.23-1.dsc to ftp.upload.debian.org:/pub/UploadQueue/ Uploading with ftp: /home/dima/debianstuff/python-gnuplotlib_0.23.orig.tar.gz to ftp.upload.debian.org:/pub/UploadQueue/ Uploading with ftp: /home/dima/debianstuff/python-gnuplotlib_0.23-1.debian.tar.xz to ftp.upload.debian.org:/pub/UploadQueue/ Uploading with ftp: /home/dima/debianstuff/python-gnuplotlib_0.23-1_all.deb to ftp.upload.debian.org:/pub/UploadQueue/ Uploading with ftp: /home/dima/debianstuff/python-gnuplotlib_0.23-1_amd64.buildinfo to ftp.upload.debian.org:/pub/UploadQueue/ Uploading with ftp: /home/dima/debianstuff/python3-gnuplotlib_0.23-1_all.deb to ftp.upload.debian.org:/pub/UploadQueue/ Uploading with ftp: /home/dima/debianstuff/python-gnuplotlib_0.23-1_amd64.changes to ftp.upload.debian.org:/pub/UploadQueue/ Simulated upload. i.e. it works with python3.7 and dima@scrawny:~/debianstuff$ python3.6 /usr/bin/dput -sf python-gnuplotlib_0.23-1_amd64.changes Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/dput", line 11, in <module> load_entry_point('dput==1.0.2', 'console_scripts', 'execute-dput')() File "/usr/share/dput/dput/dput.py", line 998, in main host = guess_upload_host(path, name_of_package, config) File "/usr/share/dput/dput/dput.py", line 562, in guess_upload_host lines = changes_file_fd.readlines() File "/usr/lib/python3.6/encodings/ascii.py", line 26, in decode return codecs.ascii_decode(input, self.errors)[0] UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xc5 in position 635: ordinal not in range(128) i.e. it dies with python3.6 The locale is C, and setting it to utf8 fixes it with python3.6. It would still be good to figure this out, but if buster will get 3.7, then maybe we don't care. I'm going to sleep now, and will look at email tomorrow. Thanks much.
