Good Day,

I landed here since this very issue, observed elsewhere,
triggered a discussion on debian-user-french. Here are a few
symptoms observed while doing a few experiments:

- The problem appeared on Xfce desktop with clipit starting up
  automatically at session launch. It did also appear when
  starting a dwm desktop and launching :

        $ clipit

- When the problem appears, another symptom is the disappearance
  of the text selection highlighting after a few tenth of
  seconds. While the text is highlighted, the paste /can/
  occur. This has been observed on xfce4-terminal and mousepad,
  but not stterm (un)interestingly.

- The problem does /not/ appear when clipit is run in daemon
  mode, where it only keeps CLIPBOARD and PRIMARY safe, e.g.:

        $ clipit -d

  and the program works as expected, e.g. copy buffers are
  maintained, even though the initial X client holding the
  selection has been closed.

- Not sure if that is interesting, but the "File" menu of Thunar
  is flickering at the same rate as the clipboard selection is
  cleared. This flicker does not appear when clipit is not
  running in faulty mode. I haven't observed this on any other
  program yet.

- I haven't been able to reproduce the problem on my main Debian
  Sid system. Furthermore, upgrading clipit using Sid packages
  to the Buster machine didn't fix the problem.

- The problem appeared even without any window manager running.

- If I purge gvfs related packages from the system, no changes.

The configuration was Debian Buster, built using the Alpha 5
Debian installer on a virtual machine. The host was the main
Debian Sid machine.

Not sure if this is very helpful, but let's hope some bit will
be informative.

Kind Regards,
