It took a while for me to find an example, as most pdf documentation are installed uncompressed currently, but then I found: hille@sid:~ $ texdoc -l ifsym 1 /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/doc/fonts/ifsym/ifsym.ps.gz Enter number of file to view, RET to view 1, anything else to skip: h ...and the document opens fine using "texdoc ifsym" using gv a viewer.
