Anyway, I downloaded and installed 1.0.5-2.1 and it behaves even worse then sylpheed-claws-gtk2. I select a group of messages (move a bit with down-arrow, the shift-down-arrow a bit to select a few messages and when I press delete the mark jumps to the start of the folder and the messages are still marked). I tried doing LC_ALL=C sylpheed-claws like you suggested in another message but it didn't solve the problem. Might be a setup problem, I will try removing the settings directory later and see if it changes anything. It has an even worse problem that it won't show my entire mail box. I have a few with over a thousand messages and I don't see all of them.
