So I tried the upgrade (well, the downgrade followed by the upgrade as previously described) with all elpa packages except elpa-smex and elpa-persp-projectile (these are not currently installable) but didn't find any byte compilation problems. You're right that the order of compilation could be non-deterministic, I'll try a few more times re-bytecompiling everything. d
