I haven't had a chance to setup a similar environment to try to reproduce this. But, upstream has released alot 0.8, so I'm working to release 0.8-1 of the package. One big change in 0.8 is that python3 is used rather than python2. I know it might be a long shot, but I wondered if you might want to try testing the unreleased 0.8 package to see if python3 helps with the build issue inside the VM.
