tl;dr: autopkgtest-virt-qemu doesn't work with python3.7. A short-term workaround is to run it with python3.6, for example by using "autopkgtest ... -- /usr/bin/python3.6 /usr/bin/autopkgtest-virt-qemu ...", or changing its first line. I tried applying the patches from https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=892023#10 to make our shell screen-scraping more robust, but they didn't help. When I added echo=True to all the expect() calls, I didn't see any output from the commands that set up the shared directory (starting with "mkdir -p -m 1777 /run/autopkgtest/shared").
