Dear Maintainer, The /usr/bin/mk_cmds script seems to embed the full path to sed and awk. The sed one in particular causes problems for reproducible builds on a merged-usr vs non-merged system. The AWK one seems to already be explicitly specified in debian/rules, so fixing this simply means doing the same for SED.
