With regard to renaming the package:
I really don't think it's worth the trouble of going through NEW, doing the
transitional
package dance and having all reverse (build-)dependencies updated.
The upstream domain is ninja-build.org, other distros also call it ninja-build
so
it's not really a surprising name that is hard to find.
