I usually look over /var/lib/dpkg/status every release cycle and file
bug reports for obsolete conffiles if I find them.
Seems I must have overlooked that indeed back then :-)

Usually, you would just bump the version number to ensure the clean up
routine is run again (in this case 0.88~).

But given that this issue is indeed already pretty old and users who
upgraded from stable → stable are not affected (oldstable has 0.73,
stable has 0.85), I'd be fine if you just close this bug report.
