The only new information I have is that the recent update to apparmor purports
to resolve the bug that was stopping me from enabling Thunderbird's profile. 
I re-enabled it and attempted to send email to people who were not in my
address book, and the emails went out successfully.  So the problem is no
longer occurring for me.
