When i changed from 65536 to 655360, the "apt-show-versions -i" went
through without a problem.

Only one repo on the entire machine (powerpc arch, so i have to use
debian-ports these days):
deb http://ftp.ports.debian.org/debian-ports sid main
maybe some platforms have bulkier hash data structures? it wouldn't
surprise me if amd64 had better memory optimization under perl than a
marginal arch like powerpc.
