ffmpeg has introduced several improvements for the amd64 platform since the cvs20050918 currently in sid, notably in the ability to play flv and h264 files. Other applications depending on ffmpeg, such as VLC, also currently lack this ability on amd64 in sid. While it's possible to use the VLC nightly builds, they in turn use the same ffmpeg sid uses and thus fail to play flv and h264 files.
