After testing Josh's patch and talking about it on IRC, I came up with a rebuilt package which one may find at http://people.debian.org/~bubulle/ttf-freefont The packaging has been revamped a little to allow using quilt for patches, which is way more convenient than patching in the debian/rules file. The upstream version is faked to 20060126b as I changed the layout of the files in the .orig.tar.gz file As far as I see the spacing problem then disappears in kedit and indeed all applications, except OOo. So, I'll soon consider uploading this fixed version very soon.
