debhelper prints the whole config.log when autoconf's ./configure fails. Thuse can be huge. The reasoning essetially goes: If all you have is a log, a long log is better than a short one. Possibly inhibiting the printing when DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS contains "terse" is a compromise? > Do you want to provide an implementation?
