Thanks for the quick fix. Since I also do not have the device at hand, I only added a patch to the Debian package and build it for Thomas for testing. @Thomas: you find an updated test version on https://www.spinnaker.de/tmp/rancid_3.8-1.1~bpo9+0_amd64.deb (it's a 3.8-1~bpo9-1 build on amd64 stretch with only the patch of heasley applied).
