Package: groff-base
Version: 1.18.1.1-7
Severity: important

Hi,

even though groff.1 claims it is supported, the groff-base package does
not include the html output device for groff. When I tried to install
the groff package to add support for HTML I was dismayed to find out
that this would drag in the following packages:

bc
defoma
gs
gs-common
gs-gpl
gsfonts
imagemagick
libdps1
libfreetype6
libft-perl
libgimpprint1
libice6
libjasper-1.701-1
libjpeg62
liblcms1
libmagick6
libnetpbm10
libpaper-utils
libpaper1
libpng12-0
libsm6
libtiff4
libttf2
libx11-6
libxaw7
libxext6
libxmu6
libxpm4
libxt6
netpbm
psfontmgr
psutils
xfree86-common
xlibs-data

Together they weigh in at nearly 50MB!

I'm in the process of setting up nightly documentation generation (on
the MPlayer project server FWIW), which includes generating HTML
versions of roff manual pages. There is no way I'm putting this much
extra stuff on a server just to get support for the HTML device in
groff...

Please either add the HTML support to groff-base or split the groff
package further, maybe groff-x11 like there used to be or create an
extra package without X11 support, groff-nox11 or something.

For me, recompiling the package with DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=no-groff-x11 did
the trick, no extra dependencies.

Thanks

Diego
