I resolved this bug on my own. I believe this is a grave functionality issue and my resolution is very round about. Here are the steps:
1) upgrade debhelper from backports.org 2) add sid deb-src 3) backport nvidia-kernel-source 4) rebuild nvidia module 5) backport nvidia-glx 6) I think I had to do something with nvidia-kernel-common too, I forgot. It'd be nice to get this upgrade added to sarge's next point release.
