I looked at it, and it seemed like making the mainline version of ashmem build as a module would indeed take only small changes. I did not have the time to actually do it, and it sounds like Ben just has done so. The driver is in staging/ thus perhaps you could push the patch gregkh's way? This would help people who use vanilla kernels. Binder is already module-capable.
