Hi, I am having a similar issue on my Debian stable after the upgrade from 52.7 to 52.8, please attached screenshot.
When I run thunderbird in a terminal I see the following errors: (thunderbird:26757): Pango-WARNING **: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Ubuntu 9' (thunderbird:26757): Pango-WARNING **: font_face status is: <unknown error status> (thunderbird:26757): Pango-WARNING **: scaled_font status is: out of memory (thunderbird:26757): Pango-WARNING **: shaping failure, expect ugly output. shape-engine='PangoFcShapeEngine', font='Ubuntu 9', text='●' (thunderbird:26757): Pango-WARNING **: failed to create cairo scaled font, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Ubuntu 11.25' (thunderbird:26757): Pango-WARNING **: font_face status is: <unknown error status> (thunderbird:26757): Pango-WARNING **: scaled_font status is: out of memory I am running kernel version 4.14.x and if I boot to kernel version 4.9.x the problem goes away!!!
