Steve, this bug is certainly serious, if not grave. We have binaries of this package in the archive which are _obviously_ non-working. At least the compilations on ia64, hppa and sparc resulted in a "bus error" (look at the build logs) and yet the build was "successful" and uploaded to the archive.
