There is a misunderstanding: this thread is about an up-to-date sid chroot built of gimp. Since the build-depends lack the dependency, the first build failed. But, then I tried to build it on Ubuntu artful (with an outdated appstream-util) and that gave the other report on gnome.org, where I discovered what triggered the issue and I tried to build it again in the same sid chroot with appstream-util 0.7.7 to confirm that the issue was solved.
