Looks like the package distro-info-data includes a .csv file that could be used to check the codename and set the correct version by default, only falling back to the running system version if no other version was found. The distro-info utilities and libraries don't quite handle querying for this information, even though all the data is there: https://bugs.debian.org/896640 live well, vagrant
