Package: mutt Version: 1.7.2-1 Severity: normal Hi! I just tried to attach a patch to a mail. The patch looks fine:
[/tmp]$ file ohw.debdiff ohw.debdiff: unified diff output, UTF-8 Unicode text And indeed, inside there's a name with 'รค' in it. All ok, properly encoded, using a sane locale, LC_CTYPE is ok, etc. However, mutt does: - I 1 /tmp/mutt-tartarus-1000-26079-3022800448 [text/plain, 8bit, utf-8, 0.3K] A 2 /tmp/ohw.debdiff [text/plain, 8bit, iso-8859-1, 5.1K] I've actually sent it as a test (#871094), and indeed, it's not merely wrong metadata, but it's a well-formed message maliciously converted to an ancient charset. Obviously, such a patch is corrupted, and will cause woe if someone tries to apply it (in this case, lintian would scream, but most files wouldn't be this lucky). There's no reason for a file in an ancient locale to exist on any modern Unix machine -- it will break the vast majority of tools, cause mojibake when displayed, etc. I have not a single option about encoding in my .muttrc; so it's a problem with the default config. Looking around, I see Linus having chewed out someone for this very problem just three days ago: https://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=152355328529145 I don't think it's reasonable to require obscure workarounds for basic functionality like this -- especially that having none of such conversion logic and sending files as-is would take less work.
