Mhh, I wasn't aware that it's unmaintained... :-( OTOH, the code seems really pretty simple and there is a python3-dbus, so I'd guess porting it would be not too difficult. Given it's simplicity, I'd also say that any serious issues are rather unlikely. So right now I'd still say, recommend it (otherwise people may only notice their smart errors if it's too late). Even *if* it would be dropped from Debian, it would simply be removed... so no real issue as well (apart from having no SMART error notification anymore). I've submitted: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/7383 asking for some "integrated" SMART notification... but whether this will be implemented (and when) is completely open, so I'd still say it makes sense to recommend the existing solution until something better is there.
