What does hpiod and hpssd say on syslog?

At startup time, hpiod says "hpiod: 0.9.7 accepting connections at 42369..." (port number varies at each startup) and hpssd says nothing. When trying to print a test page from CUPS, I get "hpiod: unable to read JetDirectDevice::DeviceID" and "hp_color_LaserJet_5500?ip=192.168.10.15: INFO: open device failed; will retry in 30 seconds..." (both of which repeat every 30 seconds). The IP address is the correct one for the printer, which is on and ready to print.

Anyway, the Color Laserjet 5500 is *not* listed as supported by HPLIP in
network mode. It is listed as USB-only, I have no idea why, though. Might
be just a typo.

Interesting. The base 5500 has no USB interface AFAICT, only parallel. Mine also has a built in HP JetDirect J6057A interface. But perhaps I should just give up on HPLIP and it's extra features.
