is to bite the bullet and run pulseaudio as a system-wide service. Yes I know this is not "recommended" but, to be blunt, IMHO that recommendation is bollocks.
No more fighting about which PA daemon gets a device, and you can actually use mpd without impacting your regular audio output. -- -- Matthias Urlichs
