smartctl is in the "recommends" of the stressant package, and so are other tools used by the program like lshw, fio, stress-ng and so on. The idea is to keep the program simple and the dependencies minimal. But yes, it seems there is a problem, even with that minimal dependency: "smartctl" is only a virtual package, if at all. The right package name is of course smartmontools. I'll fix this in git and this should propagate to Debian in the next upload. Thanks for the report. A.
