I did not generate the pdf with latex, but with python using matplotlib.pyplot.savefig() <https://matplotlib.org/devdocs/api/_as_gen/matplotlib.pyplot.savefig.html>.

I have the same issue, and attached is an example file. It used to work
with okular, it does work with evince.
