If it works for you in GNOME-on-Xorg, then yes; but if that's the case then I'm afraid the bug is probably wontfix. The extension is no longer maintained upstream, and I could well believe that how it works is tied to X11 (but I don't understand the mechanics of tray icons well enough to be sure of that). https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/495/topicons/ might work better, or not; it isn't clear which of the many forks it is, or who maintains it. smcv
