I solved it by removing ~/.xinitrc

This file had only this line: exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4

Deleting .xinitrc from my Home has not change the behavior of the XFCE DE, nor any other applications (that I know of, for now) and Thunderbird is working again.

I don't know how they're related, but that's what has worked for me.
