I have extracted /etc/init.d/nullmailer from version 1:1.13-1.2, and called: # invoke-rc.d nullmailer start It works: # ps ax | grep nullmailer 24301 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/nullmailer-send -s # cat /var/run/nullmailer.pid 24301 I have also tested by sending an email from shell, and it also works. And this message is sent by nullmailer 1:2.1-5. In debian/changelog, I see no justification of this entry: * Drop support for sysvinit, due to dropping --daemon divergence from upstream Because /etc/init.d/nullmailer does not rely on '--daemon' at all. It uses start-stop-daemon's '--background' and '--make-pidfile' to daemonize nullmailer. Could you please add back /etc/init.d/nullmailer and drop the dependency on system-sysv?
