Package: dovecot-core
Version: 1:2.2.27-3+deb9u1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

When configuring dovecot on a system using /var/mail mbox inboxes, dovecot
defaults to locking the inbox by creating a dotfile in /var/mail. When dovecot
runs, it runs as the user, who is not allowed to create files in /var/mail.
This means that deleting or moving a message using an imap client (thunderbird,
roundcube) causes the message to reappear in the inbox as soon as the client
re-checks the mail.

There are a number of possible solutions; the type of lock can be configured in
dovecot, or "ail_privileged_group = mail" can be configured in
/etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-mail.conf

Since dpkg configures dovecot, including the configuration to use /var/mail
mbox inboxes, it should also make this change.
