As I understand it xulrunner is intendend for XUL applications running "inside" Gecko by the means of xulrunner. Liferea is a GTK application coded in C with embeds a Gecko widget provided by libgtkmozembed.so. Therefore using xulrunner would mean a complete rewrite and a different implementation language.
